In the wild their sand is packed as hard as concrete, not loose like it is in a tank. Lots of baby beardies die from impaction from eating the sand. It is not a risk you should take with a young dragon.

If you do, figure the odds of survival in the wild. Do you want your beardie to face those odds? (how many actually make it to adulthood)
You'll never match wild conditions, way too many factors, checks & balances, etc.

In the wild, their favorite basking spot is paved roads. Would you be willing to let yours do that?

Just something to think about.

They don't live in the Sahara desert....they live in the Australian desert/forest edge areas.....just like Arizona, most desert is dry and arid,it's compacted dirt mostly, not sandy.....

And Joel is right, captive and wild habitats are not comparable....the most significant item besides the survival rate is the key "captive", in an environment which they are trapped in and can't choose to leave....therefore it's our responsiblity to make it appropriate and safe for them as they can't move to a more suitable area like they can in the wild.
