What size is your tank? If I were going to purchase a new filter I would spend $100 on a Filstar XP3. I am currently using an Aquaclear 300 on a 40 gallon tank and it is working just fine ($18 from Big Al's Online). I do use a net to remove solid debris from the tank and I had to tape some plexiglass to the front of the filter to quiet the waterfall, but it is effective, the water is quite clear.

I have the aquaclear running and a cheapy inside Whisper filter, it was cheap but i does get some crap out in a filtered. Keep the water moving too with both working together.

my friends had aquaclear and they said it doesnt work all that good...i had a duetto 50 and the motor got screwed up when it sucked up some of its sheddings. it got caught on the motor and it hasnt worked good ever since then. so i got this other filter called a Fluval 3 plus. it pumps 185 gallons per hour. i bought a strong one because i plan to use this filter with the bigger tank i plan to get later. its pretty big and is quite strong. so i guess ill stick with this. thanks you guys.
