C. dickersonae question

crotaphytusfan Aug 06, 2004 01:06 PM

This may be trivial to some but something i need to solve once and for all. Do C. dickersonae really have black oral melanin like all the books suggest. Mine doesn't, it's got a pink mouth, but I need to compare and contrast with other peoples lizards. If the pink is present in most this further supports their relation to the insularis group

Yes, black melanin is present in the oral cavity of C. dickersonae, although the degree and extent of the pigmentation seems to vary. In general, black oral melanin is much less obvious in this species than, say, in C. collaris. I re-checked the mouths of some of my captive C. dickersonae population (much to their chagrin) and in a couple of cases very close examination was necessary to observe the dark pigments...
