Another what should I get question..

Cee4 Aug 06, 2004 03:01 PM

I have two bps and I want to get a bigger snake. Maybe something around the 8-10ft length..I am not fond of the way boas look, sorry, I just dont like the triangular head shape or the eyes..I cant afford a E. Indigo (which is my dream snake)..I have heard the carpet pythons are hard to tame down.So what is left? Any ideas?
Thanks Cee

I was going to say a jungle carpet (I've not heard anything about them being difficult to tame).

A great alternative to an Eastern Indigo is a Mexican Black Kingsnake or a Black Milksnake.

Might also look into Pits (bullsnakes, gophersnakes, pinesnakes).

I'd also love a Cave Dwelling Ratsnake - they get pretty long.

Also, Honduran Milksnake...hmmmm...no boas....let's see.....burmese python?

Nice list! Or (if you want something very different from Boas...Try a Spilotes (Tiger rat). Striking yellow and black colors very different body.

Yeah, Spilotes are nice like Frank said. Maybe you could also consider a Blacktail Cribo? Neither of those are prohibitively expensive, and either one is an impressive animal.

My vote is for pituophis (bulls, pines, gophers). Very easy to keep, can get to be impressively sized, and come in a variety of colors. Plus, a lot of them tame really nicely if you're the type of person that prefers not to get tagged by big snakes!
Cheers!

Brazilian rainbow Boas are gorgeous!!!!

Carpets aren't any harder to tame down than some boas. They can be nippy when young but many snakes are. Once they get a few feet long, mine quit biting so readily. Coastals are the largest of the Carpets (6-10ft but rather slender compared to Boas) so you might want to take a look at them. Brazilian Rainbow boas don't get much over 7 ft but again, stay pretty slender. They can take some work providing appropriate humidity and they tend to hide all day (hey- they're nocturnal). For big colubrids, if you like Indigos, Cribos are cool. Hope you like frequent cage cleaning (just part of their charm I guess)! A Black Milk Snake can be a rather impressive critter and they have minimal heating and humidity concerns. Also- for a relatively cheap, interactive, pretty snake- Taiwan Beauty snakes get big (7-9ft), and are active any time of day or night from what I've seen. They can eat you out of house and home though, while they're growing. Same goes for some of the Bull, Pine, and Gopher snakes. They have an added bonus of being somewhat threatening with their hissing and posturing. Lots of snakes out there, do you like pattern, shiny, challenging husbandry, challenging handling, challenging cage cleaning? What's your price range?

I have a jungle carpet python and she is real docile with handling. She only tried to bite me once and that was my fault. I wanted a bigger snake then my corns but not a big snake like a boa. So found a nice JCP. This is Safari..

In answer to the questions below..I did have a jcp but gave it away because it bit repeatedly even at a year old.I just couldnt tame it down no matter what I did so I really dont want to do that again..I have thought about Bulls though. I just not sure where to get one.I cant find one locally so I would have to have it shipped and that is what happened with my jcp and I am afraid I might get another bum snake that way..I would prefer to handle the animal before purchasing if possible..I wonder if the Bulls are good snakes to handle? I might look into the Cribos I am not sure what they are..I do love the look of pure black snakes..Thanks to all for the suggestions
