Female Rat Weight?

Hoopy May 14, 2003 03:23 PM

What is the minimun weight a female rat should be before you start breeding her for the first time? I recently got 2 females that are both roughly 170-180 grams. Are the big enough already or should I wait? At what weight would you start breeding them if 170-180 is to small?

I just checked the girls I am getting set to breed....They are 230-250 grms. I do tend to weight a bit and that can or can not be the best. Some seem to reproduce better lighter. I am basing mine on feel with the girls and how their lines go. The one I am taking heavier had a grandmother that put it all into pups every litter and didn't do well. If you feel yours are eating and chunky....That said I usually like them to be 3 or 4 months old too. Some get that big much faster than others. And since we are going for feeders and weight and growth is good you want the ones that get there sooner usually.

Sonya,

Very good point about lines that produce pups that bulk up fast. I think for some breeders that is more important than small differences in litter size, but we usually overlook it.

Drat, one more thing to keep records about!
