..My dragon just bite the heck out of my finger

cee4 Aug 06, 2004 05:36 PM

I just thought I would warn others...I always feed my dragons fruit by hand but this time I had some mealworm beetles and I thought I would just give them one and see if they would like it..Anyway to make a long story short she just about took my finger off..I guess this ends the hand feeding..Im sure Im the only dummy to do this...Being bit by a 12 inch dragon is far worse than being bit by a 3 and 1/2 ft ball python thats for sure..

Nope, you're not the only one. My wife was stupid enough to wear red fingernail polish while hand feeding strawberrys lol. Welcome to dragons and the war wounds stories lol. On a serious note, make sure you clean the wound real well and put some antibacterial ointment on it, they can get infected real bad.

Yup, my fiance was hand feeding Ocho some silkworms once, and Ocho missed and chomped on his finger. I hear it hurts like all... I wouldn't know.

BTW they also go after bright nail polish and bright colored plastic spoons. as they get older they slow down so you can try again, don't give up. Oh and I would not recomend getting tagged by a 1.5 foot 2 lbs blue tongue skink, a 9 foot carpet python or an 80 lbs boxer.

that seem weak can put a strong chomping on when you are trying convince them to eat a fresh shed small superworm. I had one I was trying to push one in his mouth and he decided he would eat it... the the tip of my finger!

I used to have three types of monitors. One was about a three foot Brown Roughneck Monitor, One was an almost four foot Black Roughneck and the other was a 1 1/2 foot Mangrove monitor. Both of the larger monitors were dog tame but My Mangrove monitor was a terror. My mangrove monitor was in a 40 gallon breeder sitting of his branch abouve his water bowl. I had just opened up the top to grab him and take him out and put him into his feeding bin, when I put my hand above him he decided to leap up off of his branch and attach his jaws to my right ring finger. Naturally I was in shock as blood begin to trickle down around the monitors mouth. So I tried to kind of flick my hand but that only made it worst as he bit down harder. Finally I realized that this was a case of lockjaw on my finger so I put him on me knee and pryed his mouth off of my finger. That was probably the funniest reptile bite I have ever received because it took me a while to realize that this monitor was not going to let go.

I wanted to buy a roughneck but my wife thought is was too mean so she was looking at a mangorove monitor. When I tried to put a leash on it it bit my thumb and held on for about 5 minutes with blood pouring out every time he squeezed his jaws. When I finally bent down to put him on the floor so he would try to run, he let go and took off like a bat out of hell. my wife decided no monitors, so we have tegus instead.

to make them release you immediatley, get or have someone else get you an ice cube, hold it on the side of their mouth.

Should work like magic ! They do not like the extreme cold (shocking) and its safe !

AND SO ARE YOU ! LOL

never heard that one, I use whiskey for snakes and it works great. I just keep a spray bottle handy.

My husband had a snake on his arm and the closest thing I had was a spray bottle of diluted vinegar... it worked, and it's probably a bit safer than alcohol. However, it probably wouldn't deter very hungry/angry herps.

Was pretty funny. Was helping him examine an adult beardie and he was having trouble keeping it calm and he was doing an exam so he was popping the mouth open to check the gums for calcium..

Anyway, the dragon wouldn't sit still so I was trying to help him hold the dragon still. The dragon was behind his hands so I could not see the dragon well so when I reached around the front to try and hold under the dragons head for him I guess the dragon decided I was a good target and clamped down on my finger and grinded down.

The funny part was my finger was stuck and the dragon wouldn't let go... Stahl thought I did it on purpose and just stood there shocked.. while of course i'm trying to pull my finger out... the dragon lets go and decides to bite again before i can get it out of her mouth.. so down again goes the bite... she did it three times before she opened the mouth long enough for me to get the whole finger out.

Split the finger down to the bone pretty much... didn't feel too good. It was pretty funny though watching Stahl totally shocked and speechless... he was like "man i thought you were the bravest..." and I was like no it was an accident! Think he was scared to death I would sue him for malpractice or something... maybe you had to be there but it was funny.

Stahl is the man... that's what makes it funny.

Yea, he's one of the best in my opinion.. great guy too. Loves to just sit and talk reptiles.

Something that I've always admired about him is his willingness to teach others and to always take the extra time to do it right. We took one of our breeder females there when he opened up his new office for a checkup before we bred her.. and an exam that would have only taken about 10 minutes he spent a good 45 minutes going over a bunch of things and just teaching us what to look for and showing us things we can do on our own every month.

That impressed me quite a bit.. and I wouldn't go anywhere else when someone like that with that big of a reputation would take that much time with a "nobody" like us. Good guy.

Just not gonna help him examine any more dragons.. LOL
