Odd golden gecko behavior

CroBiatach Aug 06, 2004 10:55 PM

My female golden gecko has been acting a little odd lately, as in she refuses to eat anything that's alive. Currently the only thing that she'll eat is mashed up fruit(mainly bananas, mixed with a little honey and some reptile vitamin supliments) she's refused crickets and mealworms(i've even tried dipping the meal worms in the banana mixture, she just licks off all of the mix and leaves the mealworm behind, the smart little snot :-P) I'm probably going to deworm her within the next two weeks(I know that some dewormers act as a appetiate stimulant also)any other suggestions on what to do? She's no impacted or anything, she left me a lovely bowel movement on my hand the other day. And incase you're wondering, my two goldens get about 2 dozen crickets a week(total between the two)with some mealworms in between. I usually handfeed the female with tongs to make sure that the male isn't hogging all of the crickets and the cage is usually between 75-85(depending on how high I have my AC crank up :-P) If anyone has exprienced anything like this or has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them! Thanks oodles!

Hi,

4-7 crickets per week and golden gecko are already plenty. Also you should try to give a variety of four or more feeder insect species instead of just crickets, crickets and crickets.
No wonder your goldens git tired of them.
Also goldens do eat more vegetrian matter than most other geckos. Its pretty normal that they decide to exclusively feed on frood, baby food or even leafes for some time.
So I see nothing special and nothing to worry about for your gecko.

Actually, I don't only feed them crickets, they usually get a mix of crickets, super worms(male only, i worry about the female, she's on the small side), wax worms and meal worms. I've read that larger ones can be offered pinkies, but the male tends to slam larger food items against the side of the tank. That's why I was concerned because the female was not taking _any_ live feeders(including a few softer bodied insects from outside) I guess I should have been more specific about that :-/
