Buying this snake, but what kind is it?

Elwood54 Aug 07, 2004 02:52 AM

I also saw similar pictures to this snake with the common name "Viper Boa" or just "Ground Boa". The link to the image is below.

If anyone could identify it for me I'd really appreciate it, and possibly if anyone was able to give me a caresheet or any information about this snake I'd be thankful.

Thanks for the help!

One of the Pacific Island Boas..not sure which species, though probably carinata. I could ask why one would buy an animal that one does not know the identity of nor how to care for it, but that would be unkind.

That is Candoia asper. It is also known as the Viper Boa.

I would also ask what dependable breeder would not know what kind of snake he is selling, and why someone would buy from someone who is un-knowledgeable as that, but that would also be unkind.

Sad to say..all too many of them. The only plus to the situation is occasionally you can pick up a bargain (after makling sure it's healthy.

A good beginning is the "Candoia Caresheet" right here on Kingsnake. Suggestion: have the animal checked out by a herp vet, and ask to see it feed on rodents before you purchase it.
Imported specimens often carry high parasite loads. Good luck.
