head bobbing and so??

droppie Aug 07, 2004 09:21 AM

Hi there,
for about 3 months my male frillie is head bobbing.
the females in here are responding to this with some nice movements with their heads.
But never I saw them copulate(?)

my question is, if they copulate, how long ehhh are they bussy?
Do they mate during night-time?
Is it obviouse if a female carries eggs?

Hope there's someone out there who can help me.

If you are seeing breeding activity as described, there is a good chance that mating has occurred. I have only witnessed actual copulation once with the frilleds, so they tend to be somewhat discreet. If you are seeing the females on the ground a lot it means that they are receptive. If not, it could just be territorial behavior displays with the bobbing and head circles.
Females blow up like balloons when gravid, but it can be a little hard to tell when egg laying is going to take place. Some get lumpy, but a lot of mine just look blown up. It is important to have a spot ready for them, because they tend to go down, dig and lay. If they do not have a lay spot, they could egg bind. Just watch for digging. Sometimes the females go off food for a few days prior to laying.
Some females lay once per month, some every 80-90 days, some only once. It really seems to depend.
Best of luck

WOW thanks for your reply.
Well, one of the females do look like a balloon.
So I better get a litter(?) with some peatmoss ready for her.
Perhaps you can you tell me how long it will take for her to be ready to lay?
Hummmmmm getting butterflies in my belly thinking about her layin eggs YAY *giggle*

Again thanks for your reply.

I personally have a really hard telling when they are going to lay. If they turn down food, that is a good sign they are close, but they dont always turn down food. One day I just see them digging! And they can be fast, so if your girl looks deflated one day, dig for eggs! Some people use litter boxes filled with dirt, others just put a large mound in the corner of the cage. My girls prefer the corner.
Best of luck!

Thank again for your reply.

I'll follow your directions and lets hope she's gravit.
If so, at the time I'll post picture here.
If not, well then nothing I guess and I'll continue injoying my frillies =)

I always kept a very small amount of sand in their cage except one corner where I piled up a nice mount of wet sand. They almost always lay at night and the female will be very spent in the morning. Incubate for 65-75 days and pray. Typically frilleds first clutches do not hatch. Also several of us have had clutches go full term and not hatch.
