leo doesn't like crickets ?

MatNga Jun 23, 2003 05:13 PM

Hello all.
I am new to the forum and to leopard geckos; I just got my first one about 3 days ago. I am not new to reptiles however I have successfully raised large constrictors, large monitors and iguanas. This however is the first reptile I have ever had that will fit into a ten gallon tank and thrive with out UV lighting. So here is my question. Why is it that my new gecko will eat wax worms like they are going out of style but doesn’t show much interest in crickets? I did not feed her for about a day after bringing her home and I offered crickets to her she wouldn’t eat them at the time but later ate two late at night. However today I fed her wax worms she ate five! And was still looking so I tossed in a cricket and she really didn’t want any thing to do with it. So if she never really shows interest in crickets, I was wondering if I could just feed her mealworms and wax worms. I know they may be a little high in fat but I wonder if she will come around to eating crickets.

Also what is this 1.1, 1.5 ect..?

Thanks mat price

dont feed it too many waxies(only feed them as a treat). Leos can get addicted to them. Personally, I see no reason to feed them at all, unless your leo is skinny. To get him to eat crix, dont feed him anything for a few days and then put some crickets in, he should go after them. If he doesnt you can also try mealworms and superworms as a staple. Only feed superworms though if your leo is big enough to take them. When you see 1.2, it means 1 male, and 2 females, if there is a third # then it stands for the # of unsexed animals. hope this helped...

Thanks josh I thought I had read somewhere that wax worms could be addictive... kind of like chocolate cake to us . A staple of meal worms and super worms would be fine with me I HATE crix but don’t mind dealing with them. I will give it a try she eats wxies really good and is nice and healthy. She is about 55 grams still a little small for super worms I think. I am hoping to get a jungle phase from temper real soon.

Oh thanx for the nomenclature answer that’s something I had not seen before.

No problem. Actually, 55 grams would be big supers. As long as she has good size. Unless she has a small head...lol. She should be able to handle one at that size. Good luck!!

i believe that if the crickets are too big for them, sometiems theyll ignore them.
i fed my gecko a few pinheads that i got for my hatchling bearded dragon and i think he just found the size of those too insulting to eat

1:1 means one male to one female...1:5 means one male to five females..etc, etc.
Some leos just don't like certain bugs...my leos like crickets okay, and will have a superworm if the mood strikes them right but they love mealworms. Don't feed too many waxworms as they are addictive and some leos will not eat anything but waxies if they get addictive. Try well gutloaded mealies instead (rub some waxie guts on it to scent it). I use mealies as the primary food for my leos and they are doing great!!!
