albinoman Aug 07, 2004 12:21 PM

I introduced a BRB male with on of my female amd inmediatly the male started courtship her, I have not do any cycle this year yet, they have been almost 3 days together and I have seen just the male triyng to copulate but not female interested, Would you leave the male with the female until the male stop triyng or wait to introduce him again after cycle

I would separate them right away. The cooling phase in snakes is thought to do several things. First, it is thought to make the sperm in males fertile. This is true with many reptiles. Fertility rates are much higher after a brumation period. It is also believed to help the females produce follicles, (sp?) which eventually lead to babies or slugs if fertilized or not. I would say that your fertilty rates will be rather low if you do not follow a proper brumation period. That being said I am sure there are cases where successful births have been completed without this process. Typically the female will not show any interest until she is ready. The fact she isn't leads me to believe that any breeding activity that takes place now will be wasted effort. He could be shooting blanks and she could, in effect, be on the pill. If you know what I mean.

Thanks for your advice Mike, Yes I konw about the importance of cooling, just wanted to know about your experience with copulation out of season I have been able to produce litter of maurus and alvarezis with not cooling copulation on June and July after cooling them in Oct and Nov like I always do, I have been trying to figurated by observation when a male is ready to reproduce or atleast wanted to copulate but in this case 4 days of courtship without female coporation I think would be better to separted them like you said and wait a couple of more months

Albinoman,
. If I was you I would seperate them and periodically reintroduce them. If the weather cools or it rains or the female sheds I would put them together for a couple of days. If I was you I would also post PICS of your albino CRBs and tell us about how the breeding project is coming along with them ;o)

Be a scientist. Conduct an experiment. Leave them be.

Let them brumate next year. You never know what will happen!
