I would separate them right away. The cooling phase in snakes is thought to do several things. First, it is thought to make the sperm in males fertile. This is true with many reptiles. Fertility rates are much higher after a brumation period. It is also believed to help the females produce follicles, (sp?) which eventually lead to babies or slugs if fertilized or not. I would say that your fertilty rates will be rather low if you do not follow a proper brumation period. That being said I am sure there are cases where successful births have been completed without this process. Typically the female will not show any interest until she is ready. The fact she isn't leads me to believe that any breeding activity that takes place now will be wasted effort. He could be shooting blanks and she could, in effect, be on the pill. If you know what I mean.
