They are good for bearded dragons
Most reptile supple stores carry them (check the supplier lists on kingsnake or click on any of the sponsor links). Mercury vapour bulbs produce more UVB rays than flourescent tubes, but must be mounted 18" above the basking spot or heigher. They also produce heat and should be mounted so they are fully vertical (mounting them at angles drastically shorten the bulb life). There has been alot of discussions about the pros and cons of MVB in the forums, a search certainly will bring up a long list.

What are some Pros and Cons?

LdyPayne Aug 08, 2004 02:27 PM

Pros:

Higher outage of UVB rays
UVB rays extend farther than flourescent tubes
Produce heat as well as UVB

Cons:

Higher cost
Tend to burn out suddenly
Have to be set at a minimum height of 18"

Thats about all I can remember, from my reading. Maybe others with more personal experience using these bulbs may have other comments
