Lost and found BRB 30 days missing Help

Bodhisdad Aug 07, 2004 10:04 PM

I had a brb escape about a month ago, he was just found 10 mins. ago. I have him right now in a shoebox type container w/ moist napkins and a shallow water container. He is real thin and I have to believe dehydrated. What sort of precautions should I take in getting him up and well again. My first thought was food and water, but have read/been informed that feeding a dehydrated animal is very harmful. How long to hydrate my little one and how soon before I can get some food in his belly? Any and all replies would be most appreciated, I don't want to make another mistake w/ this little guy. Thanx in advance, Clint

What I would do is soak him in a water/gatorade mix. Obviously use alot more water then gatorade. Keep him with 100% humidity and maybe keep him a touch warmer. Give him a few days to calm down and rehydrate after his escape. After a few days try and give him a meal. This is just what I would do.

My first action would be soaking him like suggested by Mike. Make sure the water is warm but keep in mind they are cold blooded so don't go too warm. You can hydrate with pedialyte. Use a 3mm syringe with a small tube attached to inject the pedialyte. Provide a good hot spot in it's cage so it can thermo-regulate. Your next concern needs to be a respiratory infection. I would highly reccomend a visit to the vet for a check up and a round of antibiotics may be needed to offset an possible infection. Spending 30 days outside of optimum conditions could cause the infection to set in. Being that it is August the temps may not of gotten low enough for that but with AC it is still possible. I would wait a week before trying to feed it. How big is this boa? It's size may have a lot to do with it resiliency. Either way a vet visit can't hurt. Respiratory infections can linger and can eventually kill. They can also be passed to another snake so keep it quarantined until you are sure it is healthy again.

I would try and feed after the first 24 hours, a smaller than normal prey item. My reasoning is that if it develops a RI infection he may go off feed. If you get a meal down, and he gets sick he'll not have to go as long before he eats again. You can still soak a fed snake.
