When do male Mali's start to turn darker?

I bought my Mali on Nov 3rd 2003. He/She was about 3 months old. The tail looks kind of like a male with the larger pores and I can almost see a Hemipenis. But, I am still unsure, When should a male Mali start turning black and yellow? As of right now the color looks female. Thanks
