Superworms: OK for beardies?

lbhinkley Jun 23, 2003 06:18 PM

Hey there. I've had my beardies for a few months now, they're two gals about six months old, and I normally feed them veggies, mealworms and crickets. I was wondering--are superworms/kingworms OK for them? I keep reading (on websites) that they are, but they're so dang big, I don't want them to hurt my beardies...

Thanks!

superworms are a fine supplement to the diet, add it to what you are already serving, but just go easy on them, meaning dont feed your dragons a dozen a day for example, a few (3) times a week feeding them 3-7 worms each should be just fine. Make sure you get superworms, not kingworms. Kingworms are giant mealworms, they are fed a growth hormone to make them large, supers, zoophobas morio, are a seperate worm altogether and have a much thinner chitin then mealies or kingworms making them easier to digest. Be sure not to spoil them on the supers also, feed them along with your crickets, always crickets first, dont let them fill up on worms, and keep your crickets as your main protien. You will find when you get supers that there will be a lot of different sizes, you can feed out the smaller worms and try and feed those who are freshly moulted, they will be white, the dragons like those best as they are quite soft.
You can also add things like silkworms and butterworms to the diet, they are much more nutritious for your dragons, they are softbodied, high in calcium, and the dragons love them. Just a thought =) Silks can actually be fed as a staple, they are very high in calcium, low in fat and softbodied and get up to 2 inches long which makes only a few, a good meal. Hope that this helps some, my guys eat a pelleted diet with fresh salads and veggies daily supplemented a few times a week with silks, butters and some supers.
