toad slurry

marcantony Aug 08, 2004 01:31 PM

I have a couple of common toads (Bufo americanus) that I am keeping in a small terrarium. What is the easiest way to make these into a frozen toad slurry for scenting purposes in the future. I want to know what is the most human way to put the toads down, and what is the best way to liquify the toads so I can freeze small containers of toad slurry. Thanks.

If it were me, I would just go out and drive roads in areas with roadside ditches. Chances are you will find tons of DOR toads and frogs. Some are intact, some arent. The intact ones can be frozen whole for feeders that might not eat mice through the winter. The ones that aren't intact can be made into a slurry. It is always good though to have live toads as well as you can scent with them as well as their urine.

I agree completely... there isn't a need to kill healthy animals when so many are available on the road! Besides, the only humane way of euthanizing a toad is by using chemicals, which is incompatible with using them as food/scent. The live toads are ideal because they be used continuously, and if you ever catch them shedding, the old skin is the ideal part for scenting!

you can also (if the toad will cooperate) let the toad bite a pinkie and get saliva on it to scent it. If you must, freezing is the generally accepted way of going about euthanizing animals like toads, and then blending them in a blender or food processer and pouring a small amount of the resulting juice into each cup of an ice cube tray. that way you can just thaw out a little cube at a time (you could probably dilute the toad with water quite a bit and still have it work) and have it last a long time and you don't have to kill more toads. BUT there are lots of other ways to get hogs to eat--someone had success using tuna fish juice (poured out of the can) to scent when nothing else was working....so please look into other options first
