Hypo Alligator Snapper Questions

bobmcloughlin Aug 08, 2004 03:57 PM

i just bought a 3 inche hypo alligator snapper. i want to house him seperatly from my other turtles just so there are no accidents. is a 10 gallong tank big enough for this turtle? does he need a uvb light on the new tank? if i kept the water at 82 degrees and feed a lot how fast would it grow? and does anyone have a pic on an adult hypo ally snapper, if so i would like to see what mine will turn into. thanks!

Well,
A 10 gallon would be enough for it, now. It will not grow any bigger if kept in a 10 gallon tank. It's need to be upgraded each time it grows another inch in shell length, 10 gal., 20 gal., 30 gal. etc.
I have found snappers to not need UV light or anything special.

Woah now michael, you are not buying into that little myth that they will stop growing if kept in small enclosures have you. That is a totaly untrue fact. It will grow just as fast if it is eating. I have kept some in 10 gal. until they have about a 4" shell. It is better if you get them in something bigger before then but it is no big deal if you do not. They are no as active as commons and stay mostly halfway burried int he substrate untilt hey ened a breath of air. I saw a pic of one that someone posted a while back. It was about a 6" shell and was so cool looking. Search the forums for it or g to the photo galelry and search. Where did you get yours? i hope to get one in a few months from P & J turtle farm. If I can stop buying pythons lol. pos a pic of your if you can. I was going to get one last year form them and he only had one or two to hatch and they were saved. I got him to dave me one this time. I will also get a pig tail if he has one to hatch.

Justins right.
The tank size will have no bearing on keeping him from growing.
Its not that expensive to get a 20 long or even a 30 long. That'll be comfortable for quite a while if you can afford it.
I have a few of my two year olds in a 20 long. The don't need the really deep tanks like a 55 regular.
Right now I'm looking to switch some of my 3 year olds ( 5-6 inches)
to a wider tank . I think they used to make a 45 gallong breeder that was wider than tall.
Maybe I'll look around.
