Hey I have a question for you about your black throat monitor. I have been thinking about getting one for a while now just want your insights into them. All of my critters get play time daily. I am wondering about there temperment as I would be doing shows at schools for kids.
With regualr handling are they any where near the temperment of the Tegu's. I would basically socialize it from a few days after I got it to make sure it was settled in to its new home fitst. Just wondering? Thanks for your time.

honestly, i wouldnt use any monitor for educational shows where people come in contact with it. they can be EXTREMELY unpredictable. i love my blackthroats, they're great. all of my blackthroats are "tame" i guess you could say. Bob my 20mo. old male is already 5˝' and in the upper 20lbs of weight. Peggy is 4yrs old 6'1" and around 33lbs (gaining weight daily due to being gravid ) Scotty is 7mos old and 44-46" and 7.5lbs. i recently got a Whitethroat indirectly from ProExotics. she is around 9mos i believe, 3' and 3.6lbs. i really dont ever get them out for "play time". but everyday i'm interacting with them in the cage. spot cleaing, changing out water, feeding, wiping rat guts off the wall, spraying down their cage and other things like that. if i need to i can go right in and pick them up. Bob in the past couple months has started crawling out of his cage and walking around the garage. one problem with them is their nails though. when Bob crawls around on me he shreds my clothes. i have jeans that have 6" long slices in them just from him climbing up and down on me. he is really starting to become more of an actual pet. for awhile he didnt want anything to do with me. i didnt force handling i just did the above mentioned things and he became trusting of me that i wasnt going to hurt him. one day i leaned in to get his water tub out and SMACK he hit me across the head with his tail and sent me flying out his cage. the hit literally sent me off my feet. he had a LOT of force behind it. i've had waters, Black rough necks, dumerils, goulds, black trees, crocs, savs, niles. and for the most part they were all "tame", but every once in awhile they'd snap at me, or hit me with their tail. for what reason they did it i dont know, but to them they were a legitimate reason. if you wanted to do some shows where you handled them and that was it. it would be fine, but i definitely wouldnt ever set them down and just let kids or anyone just walk up and touch them or get too close. when i first got Bob he was pretty good. i took him to the store i work at. he was walking around just fine, then he saw some people about 30' away from him. he FREAKED out, ran into a corner where he had mouth open and tail swinging. i dont know why they scared him. they were just walking around normally. just things like that are the reason i dont ever just get my blackthroats out and let them walk around my house like i let my tegus do.

Hey thank you for the insight into the mind of a monitor. I had read alot on them but thought I should ask someone who has them to see the non book answer. I appreciate your time and thank you again.
