Big, hungry Anaconda

dfr Aug 08, 2004 06:50 PM

` She's on the prowl for a meal. Usually, she is the most placid of Anacondas. Most of her voluntary movement is to and from the water. Now however, she's about one week away from feeding, and it's been seven weeks. She's interested in everything. Open the cage, and she's out immediately, hunting around the house. She once decided to eat an adult male Boa c. constrictor ( I caught it in time, still got him ), so she's kept alone. I'm trying to keep her at six meals per year, as she's getting way too big. She's not yet 4 years old, and over 13 feet long. One of my reasons for getting into Yellows was that I didn't want any more giant snakes. Oh well.

GOD,I LOVE ANACONDAS!!!!! Eric aka Mr.A

dfr Aug 09, 2004 05:49 PM

` Tell you what Eric, when they get to be her size, and have a short fuse, like she does, it's a whole new ballgame!!
` She's never bitten, or tried to ( I think ), but she has her boundaries set, you cross em, she will get mad. She'll hiss, strike with a closed mouth, and slap the beejeezus out of you with her coils. She'll stand up like a Cobra, and just stare at you.
` Her efforts are very effective. Frankly, I vacillate between respecting her greatly, and being downright afraid of her. When I handle her, which is fairly often, I have several bottles of isopropyl alcohol open, and nearby.
` And when it comes to feeding time, it's tongs, crack the door, and a careful toss. She has a feeding response that makes a Retic look like a Corn snake.
` I "rescued" + $$ her back from the people I sold her to, as a baby. They made her kill her food, for her first eighteen months, and fed her way too much. She's happy to eat dead stuff, but she kills the Hell out of it, anyway.
` I've thought about selling her, but I can't take the responsibility for her being neglected because she's cantankerous.
` Snake husbandry can have some jagged edges, but the rewards are well worth it. Rich
