Hanging rack design.

vamp Aug 08, 2004 11:37 PM

In the September 2004 issue of Reptiles magazine {the all HOT issue}, I saw a rack system that I would like to give a try. It is on page 34 in the article by Brett Nelson, "Venomous Reptiles and the Law". In the pic a fellow has a small Western Rattler on a hook. I can`t tell that much about the type of enclosure that is hanging in the rack system. Has anyone personally seen this type of setup, and if so, give me a better idea of how to build it? Thanks in advance.

Where the tub runs on a set of rails rather than resting on the shelf below? Is that what you mean by "hanging".

BTW, this picture is for a rodent rack, not a snake rack, but the principal is the same.

Yes, the principal is the same. By the way,THANKS for the reply. I have only been a member for a short time, but I can see that you are always willing to help with questions. Do you think a similar system would be suitable for Copperheads? They are the only venomous I plan on keeping. Any construction tips are appreciated and what tubs would you advise using? I want something that is very durable but has decent visibility properties. Many thanks in advance.

The problem with copperheads is the fact that they are live-bearers and the babies are pretty tiny. So the biggest security concern with them is always the young.

I have kept many species of venomous, including copperheads, in racks over the years and will gladly help.

Building racks such as this are more labor intensive and not all boxes are suitable for them. And if your tolerances are off adjusting them (to make the boxes fit tighter) *can* be more difficult.

How many tubs will you ultimately want to use?

Can you give me a better idea of what you mean by decent visibility? Do you mean better than what you'd get from a typical semi-clear sweater box?

Lastly, why is it that you want to use this "hanging" design?

Is it to save weight, increase ventilation, or something else?
