More Southern Pacifics Rescued From The Shovel

jasonmc Aug 09, 2004 12:49 AM

This snake was rescued from a garage in chatsworth. Sat right on the steps in the shade during the mid of day for at least an hour before I was called.
I am stoked that people are actually calling to have them removed instead of killing them. These are people who used to kill them in the past. Hopefully the killing will start to become a thing of the past

Here is another southern pacific I removed a few days later in Calabasas. It must have been around three and a half feet. Before I was called, the home owner spotted it, and the carpet man put a bottomless trashcan over it.
I did'nt realize the trash can was bottomless. I moved the trash can to a safe spot to remove the snake. When I opened the can, to my surprise their was no snake inside. Before I realized their was no bottom, I noticed the hole in the side where the foot pedle to open the can was. I figured hell, the snake went through the hole and left. Thats when I noticed the can was bottomless. To my surprise their was the snake behind me calmly watching. I can only wonder what that snake was thinking? LOL
The snake was removed and released unharmed a few miles away.

I still cant get past the mellow disposition that most of these snakes have. Plus it amazes me that the snake didnt leave through the hole before I arrived.

Till I remove more and post more pics.
Stay safe:

Heres a southern pacific I found slithering through the blades of a non-running lawn mower in kagel canyon. It was about 4 feet long and had about 20 buttons on its rattle. I wish it would have let me photograph the tail.
Oh Well.

Those are some nice snakes you saved once again. What is the area like where they were found? I thought Chatsworth was pretty populated and I wouldnt have expected to find snakes in that area. Are there some nice untouched areas out there housing a population of beautiful helleris?

Keep up the good work to save our beautiful California wildlife!

It is nutty where I find these snakes. The southern pacifics are totally moving in with people and their homes. To give you an idea of what I mean they have been found in studio city just off of Ventura BLVD and Laural Canyon Blvd. That is an area with homes ontop of homes and businesses mixed in.
These snake show no concern with people, and seem to be adapting to city living. I used to not belive my customers when they would call me in a highly populated area, but then to my surprise their the snake is.

Chatsworth is highly populated, mostly with porn stars lol. But I guess as people continue to move their houses outward, the snakes have nowhere to go

Rumor has it that all the land from placerita canyon to the san fernando valley has been cleared for development as well. It will be shocking to see how many snakes they encounter. Its a shame that developers cant just stop building out here.

We will just have to see what happens over the years and hopefully save as many reptiles as we can.

Happy herpin:
Jason
