No diffrence they are two names for the same snake. Its also being refered to as Papayan Caprpets.

>>2. what does "moleria spilota spp" actually means?

Means A carpet python without known background or locality info.

>>3. try and check this out http://www.herpafauna.com/ and tell me what u think. the specimen quoted is in the boas&pythons list of animal available in the website.

Its ok, not phenominal color. Kinda dark, and average looking...

I Have no idea what the exact translation is but basically 'spp' means species (I think). Its a generic term for an animal in that genius. So Morelia Spilota SSP= Generic Carpet...Make sense?

hi,

spp means nothing ´cause it´s wrong! It has to be ssp - as in SubSPecies.

hi again,

so "spp" should be "ssp"? and "ssp" means "subspecies"?!?

if that's the case morelia spilota "ssp" means morelia spilota "subspecies"?

this is making me even more confuse. i know about morelia spilota cheynei and morelia spilota variegata but what is morelia spilota subspecies? a subspecies of what?

thanks in advance for any replies(pls reply)!

regards

ok!

Morelia spilota is the name of the species

cheynei or variegata or mcdowelli ... is the name of the subspecies. That is easy so far, isn´t it?

Assuming you do not know what subspecies excatly the animal is, what will you call it? Some sort oft Morelia spilota ? No! you call it Morelia spilota ssp, cause you do not know - or it is a mix of diffrent subspecies.

I hope this is understandable ?

Now with a little more time:

spp means a few kinds from one species. Example: Morelia spp means Morelia spilota, Morelia nauta, Morelia carinata, Morelia viridis and more. See the difference between ssp and spp? I hope my poor english is sufficient to explain the difference.

thanks for the comments. really appreciate it. so the conclusion is that the terms "spp" and "ssp" do exist. they are not wrong in any way. they just carry different meanings. things are clearer now. thanks again to everyone who participated in the threads.
