Egg question...

Mayo Aug 09, 2004 07:10 AM

First two eggs were laid July 17th (got two more last night). I have them in a jury-rig of an incubator. I am using the water/aquarium heater style. I packed the eggs in a tuperware with perilite just as described on Albey's website. I have a hi-low thermometer and the temp has ranged from 81.1F-84.8F. My question.... Today I noticed a fuzzy white "mold" on one of the eggs. Have a lost this one? Anyone know if this is a mold or a sign of infertile egg? The other does not show any sign of this. The tupperware is sealed with no breath holes. I do open once a week to get some fresh air in. Comments/replies would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your humidity may be a little too high. I agree with having some vent holes in the egg boxes. Do you have a lot of moisture collecting on the top of the box? Try gently wiping the mold off, then making sure you do not have a lot of moisture on the lid of the box. Wipe that off, too, if there is more than a tiny bit. You may want to replace your medium if it looks to have gotten too wet.

But DO NOT throw out the egg! I just hatched a sweet little one out of an egg that never grew and was papery and brittle and collapsed inward when I went to lift it up. A week later it hatched! NEVER throw an egg out until there is no question that it won't hatch (like brown, smelly, etc.).

Good luck,
Leslie

I put the eggs in peralite just as described on Albey's site. It said not to punch any holes and I would never have to add any water. I used a nice digital scale to get the ratio correct. I have also wiped some of the fuzz off. It is only on one of the eggs and I dont' see it on the peralite, so maybe it will not spread. There is not alot of water on the inside lid of the container. There will be a puddle on the outside top, but this is due to the water in the incubator (I jury rigged a 5 gallon bucket with an aquarium submersible heater. IT stays between 81.1 and 85.4F) evaporating to the top (clear wrap, then the lid) and dripping back down. I know if I punch holes in the container it will only increase the moisture on the inside. Should I still think about adding some holes. As described on Albey's site I do take the top off and allow air circulation once a week for about a minute.
