If I have an exposed heat lamp, will my snake burn itself on it? Or will it realize it is near something too hot and move away? It never has before, but I figure its better to be prepared.
If he will, what should I do to prevent this?

Long story short...
It is very unwise to leave an exposed heat lamp inside the cage where your snake can come into contact with it.
Yes it will burn itself - eventually

what is the best way to prevent this?
I dont know exactly what they are called... but im sure you can get them at home depot or lowes. Or get creative and make your own.
They look like mini wire cages that you can mount to the ceiling of your cage. and house the bulb inside... you probably can see them at any pet shop. They are large enough so they should not get hot and the snake can touch this safely. Some are large enough to were a yearling might be able to slip inside... but just look around.. ive seen many of these out there.. and some of the other forum members have simply made their own.
Sorry I couldnt explain it a little better for you
www. creativepet.com and www.bigappleherp both sell them. They mount to the ceiling with two screws and open from the bottom so you can replace the bulbs. They work well.
