RodentPro Mic e are they healthy???

jkins Aug 09, 2004 10:32 AM

Has any one used RodentPro? I purchased some mice from them and they don't appear to be very healthy. My snakes seem to eat them ok but I am just worried about feeding my snakes mice with stomachs that are black almost looking rotted and a foul smelling. Just wondering if anyone else has had this experience.
Thanks

Never ordered from rodent pro but if the mice are foul smelling I would not use them. Sounds like they are too old. I suggest contacting RodentPro and seeing if you can get replacements...

I have heard good things about Rodent Pro.....Only thought, besides that you need to let them know is did you accidentally 'cook' the mice when you thawed them? I have done this when I am impatient and they smell nasty cooked.

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?

Thanks for the responses. I may be cooking them when I thaw them out. I just use hot water and then throw them into a ziploc. Maybe the water is to warm. Regardless the mice still just look unhealthy. I will contact Rodentpro and let them know. I just can't believe they would sell the mice looking like that. Thanks again.

I've had stomachs on rats and mice sort of explode when thawing too fast, seems the stomach thaws faster than the rest and *pop*...
I usually thaw mine in luke warm water over night

What you are describing is decomposition. Animals that are killed and then frozen immediately - and which stay frozen until you receive them - should not look that way.

Yeah thats what I figured it was. I think they are just poor quality mice. That probably were not frozen immedialty after they were killed. Nasty

I use their product and never had any problems. I am sure that if you call them, they will make it right. I thaw mine out in warm water and have been doing it for years with no problems.

Yeah the mice that I got from them just had fecal matter all over them and just were skinny looking and very unhealthy. I already contacted them and they replaced a portion of them but even the new ones just didn't look very good. I am going through another dealer now and like them much better. As far as the warm water I used it all the time and never seem to have issues with either and its quicker than just letting them thaw out at room temp.

I must have just gotten a bad batch...I don't know what the deal is. The mice that you just got they don't look flatten and missing fur and have fecal matter all over them? Thanks

RodentPro doesn't produce all of their own rodents, which might explain the variations in quality.

jkins Aug 17, 2004 09:56 AM

That would make sense then. I think I am just going to go with a different mouse company. Thanks for all of the responses.

I have yet to find a dealer that sells healthy frozen rodents. Every single one of the frozen rodents I have ever gotten have been dead and I would say that that is pretty hard to get more unhealthy than dead.

Sorry, couldn't resit. Seriously, I have not had a problem with Rodent-pro. I have heard of others having problems, but I thgink that can be said for any large scale operation. there will always be someone who has a bad experience. I have stopped using them though as I have found a closer source that will give me comparable prices on smaller quantities so I don't have to order 5000 at a time.

jkins Aug 17, 2004 10:53 AM

Haha...thats pretty good. The humor is well taken. I think your right though that with such a large scale operation somebody is bound to get some nasty mice. I think I will just stick to Colorado Rodents. They are local for me...a little more expensive but I think I will pay the extra for quality. Thanks for the laugh.
