bad shed...help please

maestrOwen Aug 09, 2004 12:20 PM

A little over a week ago, Daphne started going into shed

so I made sure to keep the humidity up and I soaked her a couple of times

She shed last night and I woke up this morning and it was horrible...the worst shed I've ever seen. Most of the skin was still on her face to about a quarter of the way down her body, and there was another big piece of skin left on the rear third of her body. I soaked her again today and she got the skin off of her body and most of it off of her face, but she's still got the skin on her nose and lips

what should I do? just soak her again and let her get it, or should I go at the scales myself?

much thanks

Hey,
Usually with that kind of shed, if the soaking didn't get it off, then sometimes it's best to get to it manually. You should let her soak for a little bit, but you don't have to soak her in a water bath. You can just put her in a small plastic sweater box if you have one, and place a damp terry cloth bath towel in with her, and allow her to crawl through it over night -- sometimes that's all it takes. If you dare to remove it manually, then you can hold her behind the head gently, and with little pressure, as bloods and short-tails can easily freak out, and remove the rest with a small pair of eye brow tweezers. Gently lifting the torn edges of the shed away from the new skin. Be as gentle and patient as you can and it should go well. Try not over restraining her -- sounds easier said than done, but with some practice and time you will learn what I mean and will also, get the hang of it. Good luck!

Note: Remember to bump up the humidity around shed time to at least 80-90%.
