Crawling and falling?

The_asshat Jun 23, 2003 07:39 PM

Okay my snake of about two weeks likes to try and crawl up the side of her cage. She'll even stand on her log or waterbowl or the thermometers to try and reach the top(which she does easily). This usually ends in her falling down onto the substrate(if lucky) or onto something else. I'm curious if this is normal behavior for a ball python or if anyone else has a snake that does this? I don't know if she's being energetic or if there's a problem.

Also another question I have at the moment is she never had a hide spot until I bought her. I bought a log she can hide under and crawl on top of, but she has yet to actually hide or sleep in it. Whenever she does those things she hides behind the water dish. Any ideas about what this means?

Well thanks for any answers.

I have two ball pythons and climbing is very normal. Mine actually climb up the side of the tank as a sign that they want to come out of their tank to play.

As far as the the hide box, my female python actually uses a large dog bowl. She is able to hide underneath and drink/soak above. She loves it and refuses to use anythin else. Trust me, I have tried to switch.

Hope this helps.

did you cut a hole in the side of the dish for her to climb in, or do you let her just tip it to get under (I mean the plastic ones shaped like a volcano but hollow undernieth)

The dish was made with holes on the bottom of both sides for picking up the bowl.

My two big males do it all the time, even when they're not hungry. My others all do when they're hungry. I like to refer to my males as "explorers" hehe.

My large female(2700G)stays in a Vision 322. These cages have a small lip around sliding doors about 1 1/2 inches. She tries to climb up it all the time and falls. As far as a hide I have a large dog food dish from walmart. It was not meant to be a hide but she loves it so I removed the other hide. She doesn't really fit under it so have the time the bowl is half off the floor of the cage but she is happy. Good Luck Clay
