Food question

VooDoo1979 Jun 23, 2003 07:44 PM

I was just wondering if any of you have had a problem with your plateds not eating anything but insects. I've tried putting mustard greens and romaine with mine, and he won't eat it. I haven't tried fruit yet, but was planning on doing that tomorrow. Any suggestions on what I can do to get him to start eating the vegetarian part of his diet?

The only thing I could ever get my guy to eat was banana, just as a treat. I figure the strong smell made it appealing to him, but he won't eat anything else. Try holding off on feeding him bugs for a few days and just offer the veggies. If he's hungry enough he might try it, but don't starve him or anything.

Thanks...I think I'll try that. I was actually going to put some banana and apple in his food bowl tomorrow and see if he responds to that. If he doesn't, I'll do what you said about holding off on the insects for a few days. I want him to be getting the proper nutrition. As far as I know, he hasn't eaten anything but crickets for the past year at the pet store. This is probably why he's reluctant to eat anything but that. Anyway, thanks for the information!

What kind of plated do you have? Not all plateds need plant matter in their diet, my four-lines never ate any of it. My African giant, however, eats tonnes of it and is always looking for more!

Well, this is where I'm confused. I'm not exactly sure what kind he is. He looks like a Yellow Throated Plated. He has orange on his sides going from his head to his tail, and he has two light, almost white lines on the top of his body. His underside is white though. He looks exactly like the plated in the post titled, "how's this guy look?" I'm confused because someone posted that the lizard in that post wasn't a yellow throated, and all of the yellow throated's I've seen look like the one in that post. Would mine be a Gerrhosaurus nigrolineatus as was suggested in that thread? I tried banana and apple today, and showed no intrest in either one. So, I suppose it is possible that he will show no interest in any sort of fruit or vegetable.

After reading this page I saw that they didn't mention that either G.nigrolineatus or G.flavagularis ate plant matter, so I think you are okay if yours does not eat them. If you want to find out what type he is then just post a pic of him and I'm sure someone could tell you.

Mine (G. major) ate vegetables when I just got them. But after 3 weeks they didn't want it anymore. The only thing they will eat sometimes are some sweet fruits (like banana, melon, strawberries).
