Sexing RETFs

jaysnakes Jun 23, 2003 07:54 PM

Hi, my name is Jason and I was wondering if anyone could help me with a few questions I have on red eyed tree frogs. I want to start up a small community of about 3 or 4 RETFs. I was hoping to stop by a local swap at the end of this month to search for either some cbb babies or juveniles. So my question would be. What would be my best bet on sexing such small red eyes?

If I am unable to purchase these frogs first hand I would like to purchase the frogs online from a respectable company, with healthy cbb frogs. If anyone knows of such a company, please let me know about them.

I would love any information that you could spare to answer my questions. THANK YOU.
JASON

I am of the opinion that it will be essentially inpossible to sex them so small. If you find out how though, I would like to know. I keep trying, and I just keep getting females (1 male is all). Anyhow, I don't believe that it is possible.

Not really possible when they are so small. My only other thought for you would be to make sure you quarantine any new frogs for a minimum of 60 days. Also, most swaps I have attended rarely sell cbb. Most if not all are wc.

I was told that females tend to have a shorter snout but that isn't a possitive ID. The only true way is when they reach sexual maturity, males call females don't. Females are larger than the males but again, that can't really be noticed until they are closer to adults.

Thanks to all that responded. I didn't think I would be able to sex the frogs so little but I wasn't positive. If anyone still has some information on where I could find some really good healthy looking red eyes please let me know. Thanks again.

Ellismommie might have some, but watch out for the one that looks like a sock puppet which could be called kermit.
