slitherstud Aug 09, 2004 06:43 PM

Does anyone know of a web page that has a "HOW TO" guide to make a misting system or anyone want to tell me how? Cause all the misting systems have to big of a reservoir for me(I only need a 2.5 gallon NOT a 5), AND I will only need it to have 3 or 4 nozzles on it! Any ideas or anyone have something like that for sale???? THANKS ERIk

Forget the misting systems man. Check this out...it's a much better idea. I started doing the misting systems and the misters and blah blah blah. Misting systems can run you anywhere from 100-500 dollars. First you need a pump that pumps enough pressure to push the water all the way through the tubing/piping. Then you're gonna need all the parts...way too much money. Then if the misting system doesn't create a fine enough mist, then you have water saturation in your tank and it's a pain to clean it out even more often then you already have to. This is the idea I got from a vet and it works WONDERFULLY (and it's cheap too...only about 50 bucks).

Go to Wal-Mart and look at the humidifiers. Find one that's an ultrasonic humidifier. On the top of the humidifer is a round piece about 2" in diameter and it comes out...just get rid of it. At Home Depot, look in the plumbing section, and find a piece that is a reducing 2"-1" flush something or other. But what you're trying to do is use pvc pipe to go along the top of the cage and at every place you want it, cut the pipe and then put a pvc "t" joint there and point it down into the cage. When the humidifier comes on, it makes the mist go through the pipe and down into the cage. It seems hard to explain, but I'll post pictures in a few minutes so that you can understand. and on a cheap walmart timer that goes off for 30 min, you can set it to go off every 3-4 hours for 30 minutes, and it keeps the humidity up. It works wonderfully, and I really regret wasting all the money on pumps and misting bull sh*t that I really didn't need.

Dude! I've seen pics of this setup and it is bad---! Way more efficient than my misting system. I'd do it id I didn't already have what I have.

The species you are misting in part determines what type of misting system you can build. This is very often overlooked, in my opinion.

For species that drink out of a water bowl one can probably get away with an ultrasonic humidifier. These do an excellent job of raising humidity with very little water. The only downfall is that you really need to use distilled or RO/DI water in order to not ruin the unit.

For species that need enough of a mist to leave water droplets on cage walls, furnishings, etc., then a high-pressure pump in preferable. These can be more difficult to find parts for.

Lastly, some arboreal snakes benefit most from a fairly large water droplet size in order to induce defication. These can be built easily with commonly found parts.

Other important considerations are wether or not you want the system to run on a timer or if you can live with someting you turn on yourself.

One cheap system to consider if you don't need a timer is that availabe from Doug Bar (herpcages.com). Great guy, great product. You just hook it up to a normal old pump-up garden sprayer. Probably not the ideal system for large water droplet sizes, though.

Either the type that like doubleok described where you can put pvc pipe off of the outlet port on top of the untit.

There is another model where if you pop that cap off there are two holes a few inches down. 5/8" aquarium tubing fits in there perfect and you can run that into your cage.
