Handling question

vee210 Aug 09, 2004 08:34 PM

Hi, everyone!

I was wondering if you could explain to me how some of you let your Uro out of his "cage". I have taken Spartacus out a few times but I have to hold him at all times or he tries to run away from me. Is it because it's going to take him a while to get used to me? Will I ever be able to sit on the couch with him nex to me? I'm sorry if it's a stupid question but all I know is dogs, I just feel bad that I can't take him out very often because I'm worried that he will get loose in the house and if that ever happened he would be dead, my dogs would get him.
Please let me know if what I am asking is even possible or if I should stop feeling guilty because that's just the way they are.

Thank You for any help and advice
Vanessa

Never a stupid question. He may never get that comfortable that you could let him go. Not saying that it couldn't happen, but they're wild by nature. One of mine always seemed so trusting and never tried to get away from my grip. But when I put him on the desktop, he'd slowlow walk until he'd see a possible "exit" and bolt! I personally wouldn't chance it, unless there was no hiding places in the room (nothing to wedge behind or under) and no chance of dogs. Just use good judgement.

I let mine out daily and he always walks around the room. He goes up the step and explores everything. You just have to keep an eye on them at all times. I don't think they are the type of animal that will stay with you like an iguana. Keep your dogs out when the uro is roaming. It is good exercise for them to run around. Have fun

Thanks for the advice.
My euro was not bread in captivity so, from what you are saying, chance are he will always be this way he was captured when he was about 2 years old they told me. At least now I know.

Thank You

If you do let him run loose in a room for exercise, check EVERYWHERE for any tiny hidey holes. I let Joe out in the bathroom after a soak one time - after I had checked for hidey holes - and he found one that I missed. It was under the counter and I had to lay with my head on the floor next to the toilet (yum) just to see the hole, and the hole was TINY. I would never have thought he could fit. He was in there overnight. He came out on his own for some escarole I left out, but otherwise, it would have been a major deconstruction project to get him out!

When I got my Mali Uro-Ares, he was only about a year and a half old. He likes to go under my shirt and sleep on my stomach. Sometimes I put him in his "mali mate" which is just a sleeve of a shirt I cut off and sewed together so there is only 1 open end. He loves that also. Just try holding yours everyday for about a half hour or so. Ares will stay cuddled up and sleeping for hours unless I put him back in his cage. He likes to watch TV also so you could try watching an animal program with your uro and see how he/she likes it.
