Varanus Baritji

BrodieWilson Aug 10, 2004 12:44 AM

Hi,
This is a pic of my long term captive Varanus Baritji. Its parents were WC at Mt Bundy Station. Its a shame his previous owner was new to reptiles, and didnt look after him properly (notice the missing claws)

I will post some kingorum, when I find my USB cord, got a new digi today.

Beautiful monitor, brodie.... I forget, do you just have that one, or do you have a pair? I wish you the best of luck with them, as well as your kingorum... anyways, nice pic, I'll chat with you tomorrow evening...

...how'd you get baritji in Long Island? Andrew isn't going to leave you alone, now. He'll want some for sure.

BrodieWilson Aug 10, 2004 05:24 AM

Long Island???

I got them from a very experienced monitor keeper, who once upon a time posted on this very forum!

crocdoc2 Aug 10, 2004 06:52 AM

sorry, Brodie, was just having a joke with Andrew and ral for they (ral, at least) seemed to think you were a fictitional Australian herper character created by Bob (odatriad), who lives on Long Island (NY).

hahaha...

there's a lot that people don't know about me.... Did you know that I run a 'sister' publication of Hustler Magazine out of my one bedroom apartment? Or that I'm training to be a professional prize fighter? I'm also in the business of manufacturing the most scrumptious little chocolate covered pretzels.. you should try some sometime.. hahaha Well, I guess you learn something new everyday...

Cheers, David...

P.S.: this is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.

P.P.S: congrats on the baby lacie..it's about damn time... can't wait to see some pics of your new ones...

crocdoc2 Aug 11, 2004 03:31 AM

wait, I have a subscription to that magazine...

So, you're THAT Bob, are you?

The photos may have to wait a few days. I have a busy week and will probably not get a chance to take any shots until the weekend. I'm out tonight straight after work, so I will not see if the little tyke has emerged from its egg until tomorrow.

Hi Brodie, Welcome to the forum, I hope you make the best of it.

I do have a question about your barijti. Are you calling that a barijti, because of pattern or locality?

If you may, could you give a brief discription of what makes a barijti a barijti and not a V.acanthurus?

I thought the main difference was, barijti do not have occeli.

Heres a pic of one of my monitors that looks very similar to yours, what would you call it? Thanks and good luck. FR

Hi Frank,
Brodie's look s like a baritji to me. IN my experience and from what Grant has told me, female baritji do not have ocelli while males do. I have pics of pairs that show this. If I can get my scanner working, I'll try to post one.

FR Aug 10, 2004 07:25 PM

Hi Jeff, I did not say his was not, I asked him about the pic I showed, heck, you can answer that too.

As you know, I am familiar with ackies in and around that region. My feeling is they should be a subspecies of V.acanthurus. But that has nothing to do with my question.

The book says, they do not have occelli, of course I have seen them with and without. I was wondering if there was a local that all males and females were without occelli?

Thanks FR

BrodieWilson Aug 11, 2004 01:47 AM

Frank,
Baritji do occasionally have Occelli.
From what I know, baritji DO NOT have striped necks, so therefore I would call your monitor acanthurus. Another feature of baritji (not always present) is the purpleish dorsal stripe. I will post pictures of my female, who is much duller in colour than that guy.

Hi Brodie, Mine for sure, is not a barijti. But other then having more striping on the neck is very similar to yours.

I have seen neck striping in acanthurus in your area, I believe around robyn falls. I think Jeffl posted a pick of one too. Thanks FR
