It is now 1am and I'm finally able to type and see - as I've been crying for 2 hours now. Bob is dead. We're pretty certain he's dead. We have not a clue how or why... here's the background:
We got Bob, the baby ball python (16 inches) 2 weeks ago tonight from a reputable pet store in town. He seemed to be happy. Even enjoyed being coddled - he gave us hugs. He did poop once (on my leg) - and friends told me it was the correct color.
Tonight, my son went in to get Bob to show him to his girlfriend. When he reached in - Bob bit him (for the first time). My son held his tail while my husband opened his mouth.
One hour later he was beyond listless - dangling in my son's hand. He was shallowly breathing. We were going to try and feed him (he still hadn't eaten in 2 weeks - I know that's not a problem... we were going from him getting live feedings at the pet store to frozen thawed)
I called the pet store we had gotten him from. She said he must be getting ready to shed. They will bite and act dead sometimes when getting ready. (this is what she told me)
Problem was: Bob didn't have "cloudy eyes" - I don't think shedding was the case.
Two hours later, my son drags me into his room - Bob is no longer moving at all (no breathing in his stomach or anything). And it looks like his inner body has shrunk terribly - his skin is wrinkled and shrivled. We tested him in water - no response, nothing.
I know he's dead.
Here's my deepest concern - we followed everything to the letter (with one exception: we did take him out on the 2nd day and he curled right up in our laps... we didn't leave him alone) - we sanitized the aquarium - we have a heat lamp - we have a thermometer we watched almost hourly - he had fresh water every night - we used "turf" stuff from the pet store - we had a rock for shedding (with a "hidey hole"
and also a log thingy for hiding also (bought at the store - not from outside...).
There was no mucus in his nostrils - no wheezing - no "hissing noise" - no mites at all (checked with a microscope even!) - his eyes were bright. Could it still be a resperatory disease? Should I take him to the vet to determine cause of death? Could we have killed him by taking him out for 10 minutes a night from day 2? Could he have gotten anything from my dog or cat that I need to be aware of? And, if we get another ball python, can we still use the same habitat if we sanitize it all????
DEAR LORD, I NEVER THOUGHT AS A 37 YEAR OLD WOMAN I WOULD BE CRYING OVER A SNAKE!!! I'm a basket case, and my 15 year old son keeps asking me why?
Please, as knowledgeable snake people - can anyone help me with this dilema???
