Incubation of slender glass lizard eggs...

snakeguy88 Aug 10, 2004 01:49 AM

I have never really been too into lizards, but I have some experience keeping them. I was down on the TX coast roughly 30 miles out of Galveston and flipped some eggs (18 to be precise). Roughly larger than jelly bean size, and not oblong like snake eggs. I was beating my brains in trying to think of what sort of lizard or snake could have laid them when a friend suggested glass lizards. They are in the area, though I have not seen any this year (last year I saw a few hundred). A few of the eggs had been eaten by ants, and one or two had apparently hatched. I figured since the ants were moving in that if I took the eggs I really had nothing to lose as they were going to be eaten either way (and it is always good to gain some experience, especially when the eggs are destined for a dead end). My only question is how to incubate them properly. I have them on some moist potting soil at the moment. Any temps, water to substrate ratios, or other tips would be extremely helpful. thanks for the help.

Thats a good question, in (Genus Ophisaurus), the females in some of the species usaully stays with the eggs for 2 months and incubates them with her body temp !

I found this snipet
**************************
their body temperatures raised during this time by 0.3-0.4 C, similar to pythons.

So I'm not real sure of the temps you would use, but encloseure temps would be between 70- 85 if your were keeping one. So I suppose somewhere in the 80's ????

I hope there will be someone who is familiar with them that can post, in the mean time, I hope they will be fine, whatever they are. Keep us updated !

Oh hows your pyxie? LOL Goblet is a BIG BOY now

Take Care

Yea, I saw the pics of him! Really growing up. Mine is about 2 inches right now or so. He just pounds the food! He will take whole nightcrawlers and crickets from my finger tips. Thanks for the help with the glassies too. I couldn't find much information, and I have just been winging it for the past few days (which I will, in all honestly, probably continue doing!). After all, with the temperatures down here ranging up to 102 in the day and 73 at night (or somewhere thereabouts), there has to be some room for error. Keep posting pics of Goblet!

Texas. I don't rememeber which species/subspecies but I want to say slenders...I am not too huge of a lizard fan, but I think that is what I remember from reading field guides when I was younger.
