Do you provide a hide in rack?

Passport Jun 23, 2003 09:02 PM

Almost ready to add snakes to my new sliding rack. I'm going to try the precut liners as I don't like the little pieces of aspen on the floor when I remove my snakes. But I'm wondering if the snakes would appreciate a piece of bark for hide. What do you rack users do?

I made my racks myself out of melamine, and yes, I do provide hides. What I use are the plastic dog food bowls that you can find at pet stores that have holes or notches on the sides. You can then have your watering bowl and hide all in one.

I agree that Aspen is messy. However, it really helps in cutting down odors once your snakes are larger. I use newspapers, and I'll tell ya, the room really stinks about 3-4 days after everyone eats LOL. The Aspen really cuts down on this, but I only use it when necessary as I find it to be a pain cleaning cages otherwise.

If you made this rack yourself, make darn sure your clearances are not too big. On one of my racks, the bottom shelf had about a 3/8" gap in the back that I didn't notice, and one of my adult kings, who is close to an inch in diameter at his thickest point, was able to squeeze through and escaped. I had to tear apart the whole room to find the guy.
