Bosc Eggs Doing Well

jcmonitor Aug 10, 2004 10:58 AM

Hi everyone, I just wanted to drop a line and let everyone know that my Bosc eggs are well. My female laid two more clutches however the last one was not fertile. So I am sitting on a total of 55 eggs from three clutches, 25 that are do to hatch in six weeks, the rest sometime in late November, but I know not to actually expect any kind of calendared hatch date. I will post a picture later this week.

I apologize for not keeping things up to date but we just got our business up and running and have been busy moving inventory and such.

I did candle these guys and the veins are strong I am really psyched. Right now I am letting my female put some serious weight back on. My boy is much larger than her even when she is at her optimum weight.

Can't wait to see these guys hatch.

Regards,
JC

I look forward to seeing the babies.

Also, if you could, explain to Sam, how you made that female lay so many eggs. Thanks FR

It was meant to be a real one. You know, the really of what keeping monitors is about.

You see, what JC had occur, was independant of me, at least mostly.

I did not know of JC until he posted here, but I did not pay much attention to his posts(I do not keep Savs) I did see a few pics, and his monitors looked fine.

Then he got eggs and was very concerned whether they were fertile or not or to candle or not. I explained to treat all eggs as if they were good and candling does no good for the eggs.

He was then concerned with the female, I believe he wanted to hold the male out. I explained the female will go ahead and lay anyway, only the eggs would be infertile. And the passing infertile eggs does seem to be harder on the female, then passing good eggs.

The rest is sorta history, I guess he did not listen about the candling, hahahahahahahahahahahaha. And he also found out that they will lay eggs even without being fertilized.

The point is, this stuff is not forced, it merely happens.

The result of his husbandry is 55 eggs. When they hatch, he will be forced to excess some. Then all of a sudden, hes a commerial dealer, breeding his monitors for the dollar. 55 monitors, heck, thats more then many experts have ever done. That is, if they hatch, and I have good feelings about that. Thanks FR

Thanks Frank,
Always appreciate the kind words.

Yes, too have high hopes that these little ones will hatch. I know you said not to candle them it was just curiosity since I am getting closer. I know better then to candle them when they first come out now, these are not gecko or ball python eggs, these are monitor eggs. It takes 8 weeks for the circulatory system of the embryo to developed as far as I have seen with these. So I would say Frank is correct when he told me to leave them alone. Dead eggs will present themselves as such soon enough, and boy did that that last clutch. 29 eggs all infertile they went green and funky in two weeks time. They were also much smaller than the fertile ones I am sitting on, but if I didn't listen to Frank to begin with I would have given up on my first clutch which are all fertile and the ones closest to hatching because I candled them and saw no veins and was ready to throw them out. Glad I posted, very grateful for the advice I received.

As for my breeding business I must say that was misleading, the monitors are a freak accident unplanned, definitely enjoyable, but I am not ready to take up arms with my fellow enthusiasts as a monitor breeder. My two pets bred it happened, great if I can sell them and keep it up I will, but this was and is not for money. The business side of it is my leopard geckos and ball pythons. I know I dabble in many things but I figure at this point I am doing something right. "The proof is in the pudding" they say and I will not blow any horns, till these guys hatch, feed and are healthy for sale. The maybe after the second clutch hatches I will be a little more confident. So far I am just happy that I didn't kill my female or have an all out disaster.

As for what Frank said about telling you what happened Sam, well I am no expert will never say that. I just happened to have two animals that are healthy and kept well and when they were ready it happened. Now that its happened I must admit my female ovulates regularly. Actually she does it every 15-20 days give or take a day or two. I keep her well fed but she and the male have a very good "arrangement". I redesigned there cage and made it large enough for the two of them but deep and wide enough for him to have his den, her to have her den and nest, and plenty of space that if she isn't in the mood nothing will happen. However, this new setup will also allow them to breed as they like when she is ready, fat, and ovulated. I'll get pictures of that up too. As far as why or how she laid so many eggs, it was all up to her. I really did what book research I could do after the first clutch and nothing made sense. I weighed her, charted her ovulations, took temps and all to try and guess the size of the next clutch or when it would happen, and you know what I found out? It meant nothing. There was no way to predict anything. She laid what she wanted when she wanted. Its that simple. If the male bred her then they came out fertile. If he didn't and she still ovulated and created eggs she laid duds, but as of this moment I can't claim to have any system down. I just take care of them the best way I can. They have space, they have a range of optimal temps, humidity, they are fed often and mixed diet. The rest is really up to them.

Anyway my regards to all.
JC

Congrats JC,

All I was getting at with the "commerial breeder" deal was, your a begining hobbyist one day, and a commerial breeder the next. But really your the same person.

Thats the same with me. I an not a commerial breeder, I only sell excess monitors. What else we gonna do with them?

Thanks and continued good luck. FR
