How to keep Fruit FLies in the Dart Frog Cage???

jkins Aug 10, 2004 11:00 AM

I have got a question. I am trying to figure out a system to where I can keep the fruit flies that I feed inside the dart frog set-up instead in my bathroom. But also keep a large enough area in the front so the glass doesn't fog up so I can enjoy the terrarium. Any ideas? I have thought of a couple but I just want to see if anyone else has had any luck with it. Let me know.
Thanks, Josh

Use a cover that doesn't have holes large enough for the fruit flies to escape. I use solid glass covers with a small a ventalation strip in back that is made out insect-proof mesh and aluminum framing. Some people place a slice of orange in the cage so that the fruit flies are interested in the fruit rather than escaping.

I've never had an success preventing condensation from gathering on the front of the terrarium. The best solution I have found is to use RO during misting and simply keep the front of the terrarium soaked with enough water so that you can see through it. Good luck,

Thanks for the idea. I will try that. Its just such a pain to have fruit flies all ever the house and not too mention the girlfriend givin me crap for having them all over the place. She doesn't really care for that. haha...anyways thanks again.

I've never tried this on a dart frog cage but Im sure it would work well there too. On all my hatchling cham cages I paint a layer of insect a slip or bug boundary, the teflon stuff they sell to prevent roaches and other insects from escaping. The only problem Ive had with it is you have to paint it carefully on the silicone corners in order to stop all the flies. Works beautifully and I only do about an inch wide strip at the top of the glass so it isnt that visible. Hope this helps some

That is great information. Thank so much for the photos that helps tremendously. I will have to try that stuff out on my cages. Do you know where I can get some? Also does it let off toxins at all? Any response would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

If you look in the feeder section in the classifieds you should find an ad for Reptayls Bug Boundary, you can contact her and ask for the MSDS on the stuff, it shouldnt be toxic as far as Im aware since alittle bit comes of on the bugs (its why they cant climb it) and its not harmful for them to eat but Id call her to ask just to be sure. I also wouldnt try it with more arboreal dart frogs like leucs or thumbnails but it should work well with something like tincs or azureus.

Thanks. I will check them out and see what they think about using it.
