Varity in a leo diet

benzman1 Aug 10, 2004 11:27 AM

What else can I feed my leo besides crickets, mealworms, and the weekly pinky?

crickets are always good. but as a breeder i suggest pinkys only once or twice a month and try to stray away from meal worms, sometimes they tend to stay alive in the stomach. wax worms and super worms are best. but just use crickets, superworms, pinkys once or twice a month, and wax worms

I would have to disagree with that reply. Waxworms for one are not an appropriate staple or even part of a staple diet...way too much fat and low in everything that is needed.

And the second about mealworms...alive in stomachs? I thought we had this urban legend smashed a long time ago. Have you every watched a leopard eat a mealworm? Mine complete obliterate them before swallowing them. Plus stomach acid would take care of them quickly.

Who is the "breeder" that recommends all of these feeding instructions?

I have to agree with you. My leo gives that mealworm hell before it swollows it. So crickets, mealworms and the occasional/weekly pinky all dusted with gecko dust is enough it sounds like. BTW if I were breeding, which I am in the process of setting myself up for now, I would want my breeders to have a lot of nutrition to give them the strength and energy it takes to breeed. Hell, if I had a harem I would want to stay in shape for service too.

They're high in protein and (depending on the species) have softer bodies for easier digestion.

How does a mealworm stay alive in the stomach while a superworm doesnt? This is a common urban myth about feeding and as a owner whos been feeding mealies for 5 years without incident i can tell you thats not true.
Also, anyone who feeds waxies regulary does know alot about insect nutrition. Excessive feeding of fatty foods such as waxies can lead to problems with the liver.
The best thing to feed are mealies/crix/supers/silkworms. That should be enough variety but waxies and pinkies can be fed on occasion, just not in excessive amounts.
