Wanting to rescue...

Tegan Aug 10, 2004 04:53 PM

I've heard way too much of iguana's being "disposable pets" (I cant stand that term!!) And I thought it was about time I opened my home to a homeless iguana. I've started prepairing for one, which at this point means A. Remodling a basement room, and B. Looking into caging.

The remodling is going slow but steady, and I'm pretty much sure I know what caging I want to use. I'm not new to reptiles, I've kept and keep various different reptiles for a while now, ranging from several species of geckos, to large lizards, to snakes, to turtles and torts. So I know the varried care that reptiles in general need. But I want to be the BEST home I can be for the iguana I adopt...so I want to make sure every thing is PERFECT. So pretend I am an absolute newb.

What reading material do you suggest I perchase? I have several weeks before the basement room is remodled (it's not a damp cold basement just in case you were worried...its a very well climate controlled walkout.) so I have plenty of time to get the research done before I even start building the cage. I allways thought I would never get an iguana because they were "too difficult" but now I dont see how I CANT get one. After working with large lizards for a while I've just fallen in love with them. I used to be a HUGE python person...but the more I work with large lizards the more I wonder why I didn't start keeping them first instead of pythons!

So anyway...back to my question...

What reading material do you reccomend?

I would suggest getting the Book that Melissa Kaplan wrote
Green Iguanas for Dummies.. its my bible...lol it has helped me so many times.. i covers absolutly everything.. from setting up a cage, feeding and breeding it has everything.. by far teh best 20 bux i have spent on him so far... i HIGHLY RECIMEND that book for any one looking into getting an igg

Also what size one are you looking at getting big or small?

I love my big guy.. i adpoted him last november.. a few days after Thanksgiving actually... he is the best.. i find that adopted iggs tend to be the sweetest..

Youll love having an igg. he will become part of your family.. i have bonded better with my igg than anyother pet we have at our house.. i have a bond with my igg that i dont think ill ever have with another animal.. You treat him good and youll have a friend for a long time..

Good luck with getting an igg..

The Green Iguana Manual by James Hatfield III. Fun reading while you're learning and the info is up to date. Where are you located?

I'm in Des Moines, IA. Not a ton of Iggs to rescue around here (that I've seen) but I'm willing to drive to give one a good home.

Best book I've bought in a long time, an excellent read with alot of good ideas as well as experiences, pictures, plans, photos... highly recommend it! I picked it up from amazon.com for a very reasonable price.
