Stunted growth, or normal?

kephy Aug 10, 2004 07:15 PM

Since I got him in January Domo has grown at a steady pace of about 1 inch every 3 weeks. On July 17th I measured him at 15.75 inches, and he hasn't growth (length-wise) since. He may have gained weight, but I don't have a gram scale so I don't know.

Now, at one point a few weeks ago, for about 6 or 7 days, he lost his appetite for crickets which I believe was due to a change in suppliments. I changed his suppliments back and he's been eating like normal again since. Salad & pellets every morning, and plenty of crickets every afternoon.

Would that brief lull in cricket eating cause him to stop growing so dramatically?

Or is it fairly normal for a dragon to slow it's growth rate quite a bit as it reaches sub-adulthood? They can't grow one inch every few weeks forever, it's gotta slow at some point, right? But is seven and a half months of age too soon? Should I be concerned?

we've noticed with many dragons they do that.. they hit a big growth spurt when they are young and grow tremendous amount up until around 6 or 7 months.. then some kinda slack off for a month or two.. then they hit another growth spurt and put on more lenght and size to them. Thats why we normally wait on breeding until they are older to make sure they have gone through that second growth spurt.

We've seen that with quite a lot of dragons.. not all do it.. some will also max out at that size and not get bigger. i wouldn't worry too much. seven days without crix won't stunt your dragon.. if you were consistent with that there would be problems.. but no im sure it's fine.

Whew, thanks for the response. I feel a lot better. I didn't think the cricket thing would cause that, I just wasn't sure because that was the only thing that had changed (besides the supplements, obviously). He didn't even go off crickets completely, he just went down to 1-5 a day as opposed to 20 or more.

I'm glad it's a normal thing and I didn't screw him up, my mind is very much at ease.
