Kiln dried is best. I personally don't like shavings with rats as often (especially hairless) they are sensitive to even that. I use cellsorb plus/ yesterday's news or just plain old rabbit pellets (when the humidity isn't so high that they mildew overnight!)

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?

We use and recomend Gentle touch bedding, its very amonia absorbent and non toxic, biodegradeable and expands to almost 150 times its size.

i will definately look into using what you guys recommend but i just bought a huge bag of pine shavings today when i bought my 3 rats.... double checked the safety of pine substrate before i used it and found a site saying it was UNSAFE..
so i'm just using my aspen shavings for now that i had for my mice.
is the bag of pine safe to use? then switch to other things when it's gone?
thanks
i currently use pine shavings for my rats.i never make the bedding more than an inch thick as they will burrow and pine is somewhat dusty.i have had good results.i would highly recommend a water bottle, not an open dish.have fun!
I've used pine with good results. Same for aspen. I am now using shredded paper, which is much cheaper, and in my opinion, controls odor the best.
