I was working on some cage modifications and............

I thought I was going to have to wait until fall to get these two to breed! I am sooooo excited!! I was installing the board you see that holds the rubbermaid in place as they keep moving them. So I put my male Salmon hypo in with my big girl, and they went nuts! She would get on top of him before whenever I tried them...she would litterally hold him down. Now she was letting him ride her and now they are copulating ...within hours! Anyone know any info that can help me now please share. This is my first time breeding Boas. Do I just leave them go and just don't bother them, how about cage cleaning? Can I take them out after a few days or do I just do minimal cleaning and just leave them alone? Thanks for all the great posts from everyone! Andy Federico

girls right now. I have witnessed copulation, swelling and now she is in the 11th day of her POS. Maybe Im wrong but I say that if they are courting and she and he are both healthy let 'em be. Just my opinion though, as I do not have many attempts under my belt either.

Thanks, you took the words out of my mouth. In my opinion if she is receptive it is her cycle. The only negative that could come of it is if you live somewhere cold like Michigan, babies may come when it is too cold to ship. Craig

Why exactly would she not ovulate? The boaphile book says he breeds almost every month out of the year. Are you saying it would just wear the male out? Please tell more. Thanks Andy

If your goal is to breed them obviously it would be counter productive to separate a breeding pair. I always pair them up early and let them decide when the right time is. After all, they are the experts not me!

I've bred boas this early many times with great results. Leave them together and start cooling them down at night. When ours breed in August we usually see babies the first week of March. Good luck!

First, let me say that the majority of my experience comes from BCC, but I will state my opinion.

Colombian boas can be breed just about anytime of the year, but why do 95% of babies come in 3 months of the year? You increase your odds of getting viable offspring if you breed boas during certain timing.

BCC are near impossible to breed off cycle. Now, you can get males to court (I have seen males that will breed gravid females, and would probably court a garden hose lol), but the key is getting the female to ovulate. How many BCC litters do you see in March????

Some studies have shown that bearded dragons produce a larger amount of fertile eggs if properly cycled. Why not improve your odds?

I just feel that you will increase your odds if you seperate them and breed them later in the year.

I agree with what Mark says, it would be a good idea to cool them now. That usually slows down courting, and cycles them female.

Just some food for thought though.......

emm.. that would be a 7 month pregnancy?!! don't boas usualy have a 4 onth pregnancy? what the deal ehre? she retains the sperm plug and uses it later on ? can boas do that?

for courting, follicular development and ovulation plus the gestation.
I have a pair that have been courting for months. I've never seen her ovulate. So I'm not sure what I'll do at this point. I may seperate them, feed for a couple of months, cool and try again.
