Mine stay buried most of the day too, they both stay out for about 2-5 hours I'd like to know if other peoples Tegus are like that too. You might want to lower the ambient temp a little. I keep mine at low 80s all the time.

Well, I've only had a hatchling tegu for less than a week, but he's definitely a late riser. He's been coming out to bask and eat between 1 and 2 in the afternoon. At that point, he stays out for half an hour or more, then alternates between coming out and roaming his cage or basking and hiding again the rest of the afternoon. Sometimes when he's hiding, though, I see the wood chips move as he tunnels around the cage, so I know he's not snoozing. His temps are right, and he's alert, eating well, and pooping every day, so I haven't really been worried about it. I have a uromastyx mali that does the same, only coming out in the afternoon while her cagemate is out all day.

I used to have a black and white and he was only up for around 3-4 hours, I guess it is normal for them. On the other hand my blue stays up for a long time. He comes "out of the mulch" pretty late (midday), but stays awake for 6-7 hours easily. And he/she does not remain awaken for the food; he eats, digests and remains basking. He is a character!!

when i first got my tegu (arg b/w) he would spend most of the day buried and would usually only come out if i touched around where he was buried, he didnt seem to like this very much as he would have that tipical p.oed look and get a little huffy but soon got used to being woke up. he got to the point where he would just jump up with a suprized look on his face but didnt seem to mind it as much. i would do that at the same time every day (around noon) and now he wakes up by himself around noon and pretty much stays out all day unless it gets to hot (need a thermostat) or until i turn the lights off which is around midnight.
