What kind of Gecko?

verrykerry Aug 10, 2004 10:35 PM

One of my pharmacists just got back from Cancun Mexico and found this little guy in his luggage. It looks alot like a leopard gecko to me... You can't tell but this little guy is about the size of a small paperclip and he's currently living in my heated snake room in the smallest size critter keeper available.

What kind of gecko is it?

Thanks,
Kerry

Hi Kerry,
It would appear you have a young Meditteranean Gecko (Hemidactylus turcicus) The only other thing it could be is a Leaf-Toed Gecko (Phyllodactlyus xanti) How to tell the difference between the two is this; the Med. Gecko's back is covered with tubercles, while the Leaf-toe's back lacks these. Another way is by looking at the toe pads. A Leaf-toe has very distinctive toes that kind of angle out to the front, while the Med has toe pads, they look more like a typical gecko's. Hope this helps.

Deffently not a leopard gecko. I find those all the time but I can't remember the name! They live in Arizona so check out reptiles of arizona and you should defently find that little guy in there.

Hello VerryKerry:
The lizard in the picture is a Mediterranean Gecko (Hemidactylus t. turcicus). Have a Great Day!!!

That seems to be the concensus... Everyone agrees with what you said... We have a very very similar or possibly exactly the same type of gecko native here in Dallas. Soooo I let the little guy go on my patio and he's currently living under the porch light on the wall next to the sliding glass door. I turn the light on at night to attract bugs and I see him every evening "stalking" them.
