Some AFT Questions....

doubleok Aug 10, 2004 10:56 PM

I have two sub/adult AFT geckos, and something concerns me. The male has stomatitis, but he's been to the vet and is on Aglimyde for the anti-biotic and I can understand if he doesn't eat for a while. I imagine he eats some, because he's not getting skinny. But the female that I have, I've never seen eat anything, except for when I felt that force-feeding was necessary. I've had them for approximately 2 weeks, and if something was wrong with the female internally, I figure that I would have seen it by now, because I've seen an AFT gecko make a 180 and go downhill in around 2 days. But, the funniest thing of it all is that she's shedding. Am I worrying over nothing, or should I still be concerned? A fecal will be done on her, but these questions are for peace of mind.

one thing i notice about AFT's is that their eating habits can change at the dropp of a hat. it could be she is stressed about the other's illness, or mabey your just not awake when she feeds (they are nocturnal afterall). if she is starts losing weight then you should take her to the vet too. i don't know if stomatitis is contagious, but mabey you should think about seperating them till your male is better.
best of luck.

You should definately separate them for a bit anyway. How big is their enclosure? I would suggest feeding them separate and when you do either put them in a small enclosure and feed in there or take everything out(hide, dish, sweatbox, plants)and feed in their home. They only like to hunt if it is right in front of them. They don't tend to search for food and they do not have very good eyesight. I have a little girl who is not very coordinated and they other geckos tend to get more than her so I sometimes feed her alone. I also have started to give pinky mice for treats about once a week. This really helps with weight issues. They have to be live pinkies b/c they need to see it move to want to eat it. Hope they are okay, good luck.

their enclosure is a 20H and they have plenty of room. there's two hides in there and they're practically on opposite ends of the vivarium...and each one stays in a different hide. It's very rare to see them in the same hide.
