Rem Jun 23, 2003 10:00 PM

HE has some puffiness...someone suggested Boric acid.I just got some boric acid and dropped it in his eyes today...do I continue to give him a drop daily until the puffiness goes down? How many times daily? Anyone? Thanks

It seems whoever told you to administer boric acid was right. Here's some info I found at http://www.sliderhome.nl/index.html

Eye-problems
Symptoms
The turtle keeps her eyes closed, they are swollen and she refuses to eat. When it is not treated it can lead to permanent blindness. Eyes problems are often a sign something else is wrong. They cab be the first symptom of diseases like shell-softening or other infections which are characterized by a drop of the immune system.
Causes
These are poor quality of the water, lack of vitamin A and improper care.

Treatment
The eyes should be treated with diluted boric acid (60/40) or sulfamethiazine. The water in the tank must be kept clean to avoid infections. Give your turtle a reptile vitamin supplement on a regular basis. If you do not see an improvement in 5 days take her to the veterinarian.

unfortunantly, it doesn't say how often, I'd suggest calling your veterinarian just to make sure.

Thanks Beth, it was you who told me about the boric acid! (A few days ago). I just cleaned the tank again and am looking for some kind of vitamin for him. Unfortunately my regular vet for my cats doesn't deal with reptiles, so I gotta find someone else now. Thanks again!
