Didn't know this coloration existed in NY.
I'm assuming this is some sort of red eastern garter, anyone else have other suggestions?

That is a reddish (erythristic) eastern garter. You can see similar snakes at http://www.gartersnakemorphs.com/redeast.htm, imo yours is nicer then most of the CB ones.

I sent this pic to the bait company whose address is on the bait container. They found the picture really interesting. And wanted to see the site where it was published online. Looks like free advertising to me. And it could show that their worms can catch more than "just fish". lol!
Pretty snake, though.

That specimen is really beautiful. I have collected garter snakes with all sorts of patterns and colors over the years, and I once collected a large female that was rusty orange. But that snake blows everything away, nice catch!

Don't want to be negative but I do know of someone who found toads and frogs in an area of NE Pa and they had a similar red coloring. It wore and shed off.....something in the water. Sure hope you snake is a natural that red. Very nice.

It may jut be a color that is genetically suited to the area, or maybe, the garter snakes are eating the red toads, pigments can transfer. Try eating nothing but carrots for a week and see how red you get!
