Humidifiers

I just found out about using an ultrasonic humidifier instead of an expensive misting system. On the top of the humidifer is a round piece about 2" in diameter that can be taken out. At Home Depot,in the plumbing section,is a piece that is a reducing 2"-1" flush something or other. They said had the pvc pipe to go along the top of the cage and at every place you want it, cut the pipe and then put a pvc "t" joint there and point it down into the cage. When the humidifier comes on, it makes the mist go through the pipe and down into the cage. I wanted to know if that is a good system to use with cwd.

Funny thing...I think you read my post. Yeah...I have 3 wds and it works wonderfully. My big male Ozzy has had the hardest time shedding and once I installed it, about a week later, he shed. Great idea I got from a vet. Only con that I can think of...is if you keep it on ALL the time, the substrate can get saturated.

Yeah, I seen it, I'm tryin to do some research. Now I'm building an enclosure 6.5 ft l by 3.5 ft w and about 7 ft high up to the ceiling. So far I have the base done, I just need to build the walls, ceiling, and then construct the interior. I have a question for you, dogg, how big is your male? I know they grow to 3 ft long, but i want to know about their girth and weight. Holla back

My "bigger" male is about 16 1/2 " and about 66 grams. He's only about a year and a half. You'll have to experiment with timings and your locations of your "t" junctions in order to get the humidity right. He's only about an half an inch longer and about 3-4 grams heavier. I also just found out he's got a dislocated femur..

I'm not sure how big they can get, weight wise, but I expect several hundred grams.

Males can reach 1000 grams and 40 inches. Get a timer so the humidifier doesnt run all the time, you will have to experiment to find the right combination of off and on times.

Is it true that you have to use distilled or RO/DI water so that the unit won't get ruined?

your building a humidity system rather then a mister. I guess it depends on where you live as to which is better. Where I live humidity is high and a misting system would be better. As far as cost, I don't see the difference. For a misting system you would need to buy a pump and for the system you described you would need to by an ultra sonic humidifier, which cost about the same. there would be virtually no difference in how the PVC was setup. Accept perhap the addional spray nossles, which aren't more then a buck or two.

yeah, i'm out here in vegas, where everything is dry and burnt up. i'm just contemplating which system i will use.

I use tap water...and it works fine. However, I do use Repti-safe to remove chlorine and other toxins. Trust me...it's cheaper. the humidifier is around $35-$40 while any pump that's gonna produce enough pressure to squeeze the water out of the nozzles is going to be $100 . PVC pipe will cost you no more than $5, "t" joints and elbows and caps are about $0.50-$1.50 each, and a good timer (top of the line) is about 20 bux. You'd have to buy a timer anyways...so that is just necessary. Misting nozzles are a couple of bux a piece. But with any type of pump, you'd have to have a converter to change the size of the tubing (you don't want to use PVC for a misting system, it's much more difficult to work with). and those converters (the whole brass one changing from an approximate 7/8" to 1/4" is about $30). AND if you live in a high humidity area, you won't have to have the timer on as much, thus less filling the tank. Misting system is gonna run you anywhere from 200-500 dollars and you'll spend under 100 for the humidifier. TRUST ME...I've done everything in the book...drippers, foggers, misting systems, bubbling water, daily misting, weekly misting...blah blah blah. This system is the way to go. If you're interested, I can email you pictures to show you how mine is set up and if you give me the cage size, I can give you the materials to get from Home depot to construct it. Email me at creed_ggd@yahoo.com and I'll help you out. AND ANYONE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER!!!
