Petland

GECKOX12 Aug 11, 2004 03:10 PM

Who else thinks this place is good? I ditched PETCO for Petland(its a longer drive but its worth it), and AFAIK they are good with Reptiles.

What do you guys think?

the petland here in toledo, ohio is ABSOLUTLY HORRID! they have dead reptiles in with their live ones. they don't take care of any of their animals and they get their dogs from puppy mills. to be honest the only petland that i know of that is decent is in northern indiana. i don't like petco either but the one here is probably the best petstore in the whole city. everyone else hires people who could give a rats behind about animals.

I guess it just depends on the person hired. There are people who get jobs at these stores who actually care for the animals and try thier best with the resources available. And then there are those who needed money and it was the first job available. They see the animals at the store the same way another employee would see hamburgers at a fast food restaurant. Just something they have to put up with until thier shift is over.
Did this make sense? OK I'll get off my soapbox.

Yeah I agree. The people at mine seem very nice and they also seem to like animals. The place here also has some nice birds, I dont know which kind but it was in the 1000 range, and it could talk...

they normally sell macaws. i'm glad the people at your petland know wha they're doing. there is a macaw at my petland and he is scared of hands which means he isn't a handfed baby. i'm also a bird freak and know alot about them so if your petland is good and their leo's look healthy i'd go with them as opposed to petco.

Actually they dont sell Leos any more....Last time I saw the cage there was only one left, but then again, I havent been there recently...

But yea its much cleaner and better than PETCO.

I *heart* my local petland in Langley BC, Canada (except that i'm pretty sure their puppies arent from the best breeders...) But their reptile department is awsome! I got my first leo there 6 years ago, and she was actually bread by one of the staff members, so he made sure i knew my stuff! mine also has an awsome "bug" department! they sell everykind of meal-super-wax-worm possible along with nice gut loaded clean crickets. I would definatley reccomed them to anyone looking for knowledgable staff, and nice animals.

We don't have a petland here, but I'll make a comment on the employees.

There is a reason that pet stores hire unqualified people to care for the animals: Money. The pet stores that don't care about animals hire people who don't care about animals because it costs less money.
If they do care about the animals, they will have to train them, or hire more qualified people (which means a higher pay rate). So it's both, the employees and the store.

I live in NYC and we have Petlands all over the place and believe me when I tell that I have been to at least 8 of them and there is only one that I've been to that their Leos look healthy. The others look sickly with thin rat tail-like tails. Petland is awesome for buying food and supplies for your leo's because everything is cheaper. Their animals are cheaper too because Petland breeds their own animals.

There are only 3 Petco's that I've been to here in NY and all 3 of them have healthy looking Leos. Everything at Petco is much more expensive than at Petland.

Neither of them care for their Leos properly because none of these places have humid hides for their Leos. Most Petlands don't have any hides for their leo's just driftwood for them to climb.

If you plan on buying a Leo from any of these places be prepared to quaranteen him or her, and have a fecal done by your vet because most likely they will have some kind of parasite.

Every gecko i've gottan from both petlands here in NYC have died, theres a store here in the bronx on 231st st that has sick leos that look like they just camne back from war

then there one up here in yonkers NY that keeps them on walnut shells, theres a huge female blizzard in on of their tanks with about 6-7 cagemates including 3 anoles 1 green iguana 3 long taild grass lizards...its really idiotic...

i will be giving classes on herp care there from now on every 2 weeks

the petco up in yonkers is the best pet store i've ever been to, they keep their baby lizards and snakes on papertowel and carpet, the leos all have humid hides and i've never seen a sick on there in 5 years

When I first started looking at AFTs, I couldn't find any anywhere...and the places I found them had REALLY high prices. Well, the male that I found at Petland was only 14.99 and had stomatitis. I figured, what they hey, let's see what happens. I asked about the guaranty and they said 7 days. So I took the little guy home. Come to find out, he had endoparasites and gave me the worst bite from a lizard I've ever gotten...it hurt like a mofo and bled forever. And then there was the chance of infection from the stomatitis. So my opinion of Petland...they suck balls. And their prices are MUCH HIGHER too.
