A sad day...

herpin1579 Aug 11, 2004 03:41 PM

Two weeks ago I collected a gravid eastern garter. She measures about 40in. Today she gave birth to 11 live babies and 16 dead ones! All of the dead ones were fully formed. Did I do something wrong?

I have collected Thamnophis that dropped babies the next day, and some of them were stillborn. Sometimes it just happens, even though we don't know all the details.

Most likely it was a problem with the males sperm or possibly the female was just a little younge.

I am almost impossible that it was your fault.

What temperatures were you keeping her at? If a gravid female is kept in too cool of an enviroment, it can cause still births. I made this mistake with my blue-stripe garter.

I kept her in a 2220 rubbermaid container in my room. The temp stays about 80-85 during the day and about 75 at night.
